Student Council

Do you like adventures and challenges, do you want to develop your passion, show your initiative? Do you care about gaining valuable experience, useful in your future work? Join the group of active members of the Student Council of Vistula University and Vistula School of Hospitality (previously Warsaw School of Tourism and Hospitality Management), who represent the interests of the academic community, alongside the University Authorities.

Students who belong to the Student Council, care for the rights of students and ensure that they fulfil their obligations, resulting from the status of a student while providing students with information about the life of the University, and organising various types of events, competitions, festivals, and conferences. Thanks to the initiatives and activities of the Student Council, you can have fun, develop yourself, and participate in meetings with famous people from the world of science, politics, and culture.

Who are we?

According to the regulations, the Student Council is an organ, without which, the University cannot function effectively. It is a platform that has a positive and effective impact on the life of the University. Its main goal is to help students solve problems they encounter at the University and to support staff in the process of better understanding students’ needs. The Council makes every effort so that students have a ‘voice’ that is clearly heard and taken seriously. It strives to implement the changes you expect.

Interested in joining our Student Council family?

The Student Council consists of 15 students who receive the most votes in elections that take place on the USOS electronic platform. Then, the newly-elected Council selects the Executive Board.

Student Council members’ duties:

The Student Council, as a representative of Vistula Universities SC, has a certain set of responsibilities to be met by its members. First and foremost, what needs to be remembered is that we are the bridge, connecting students with the officials of the University. The SC needs to bring about and be the change that students want to see inside the walls of their University. It is our duty to create bonds between the two, and also inform SC members that they must:

  • attend all meetings, twice a month;
  • attend all weekly meetings in room 31 (EXECUTIVE BOARD); 
  • attend any urgent and special meetings arranged by the Presidents;
  • volunteer for different Student Council sponsored events (at least 50% attendance); 
  • set office hours (for Students-SC member talks);
  • behave appropriately, at all times, at the University. Inappropriate representation of the SC might lead to temporary or even permanent removal from it – to be decided by the President/Co-ordinator;
  • make sure that your work for the SC is carried out, regardless of your private schedule;
  • do not use the SC as an excuse to be absent from your classes. Your first duty is to be a successful student; 
  • be as organised as possible, as different tasks will be assigned to you throughout the year, and they must not turn into a mess;
  • all members should be responsible, punctual, reliable, enthusiastic, and very professional with high communicative skills, in order to be able to connect with students’ standpoints, easily.

President  the leader amongst the ‘leaders should:

  • Organise, lead, and come up with an agenda for each SC meeting.
  • Facilitate the discussions during the meetings. Make sure that everyone gets to share their ideas whilst not getting interrupted.
  • Be extremely, even ridiculously organised and flexible, in order to encourage good brainstorming. 
  • Seek co-operation; however, the President will have the ‘casting vote’ where there is a 50-50 voting situation; hence, the President has, in theory, two votes, on such occasions. If you see someone’s positive contribution on the SC, make sure they know that the hard work they are putting into it is highly valued.
  • Be the role model for the entire Council. Maintaining good grades is one part of it.
  • Be easily accessible, so that when someone needs to be heard out, you are there for them.
  • Positive attitude is the key to successfully managing the SC. 

Vice-President  ‘the creative mind of the council’ should:

  • You need to represent the SC at the university, or other meetings when requested by the President.
  • You need to be the person to co-ordinate the work of the members, alongside the President.
  • You have the right to fully preside over SC meetings when the President can’t attend them. 
  • Be a person encouraging and complimenting the members for their work.
  • Maintain a good academic reputation in order to be a role model for others.
  • Attend all of the meetings.
  • Try to be caring, responsible, trustworthy, and fair, under all circumstances.

Secretary-General ‘making sure everything is recorded’ should: 

  • During every single meeting, you need to be the one taking notes on all discussions and voting. 
  • Take and distribute minutes of meetings. Prepare exact agendas for meetings. Discuss them beforehand with the President.
  • You need to keep an organised folder of all past agendas in the binder of your SC year, in room 31. 
  • You need to be very well organised and maintain a good academic reputation at all times.
  • Even if you are not taking part in activities planned by the SC, you need to be present during the meetings, in order to provide the Council with records of the discussions, afterwards.
  • Take charge of correspondence. Such as writing “thank you” notes to professors or students, on behalf of the SC.

Programming & Events Chair a ‘highly creative and organised member of the board’ should

  • Be the person brainstorming for some fresh, new ideas for SC events. 
  • Come up with an agenda for each event, and present it to the Presidents, to see what they approve and what not.
  • Be present at meetings, especially when discussing the organisational matters of events.
  • Make posters for events, two weeks in advance, and send them to the Presidents.
  • Be very punctual and active on Social Media (daily posts).
  • Promote events in every way possible. 
  • Maintain good grades and be easily approachable all the time.

Communications & Outreach Chair ‘making sure everyone knows about the SC, inside and outside of the University’ should:  

  • Present on mostly all of the SC meetings throughout the year. 
  • Be the person responsible for promoting events, inside and outside of the University.
  • Be in charge of attracting as many sponsors for big events as possible.
  • Be aware that the Student Council will not be able to function without you, as you are the one to make sure that everything is taken care of, in relation to matters between the different departments and the SC.
  • Note that if you have the relevant experience, social media promotions can also fall under the guise of the person holding this position. 
  • Be as active and organised as possible.

Not forget to maintain good grades throughout the year. 

Student Advocacy & Issues Chair – a ‘bridge between the students and the SC’ should:

  • Be present at every Executive Board meeting.
  • Set at least 3 hours per week, to spend in the SC room, to talk with students about the problems that need to be dealt with by the SC.
  • Help with organising at least 50% of SC events.
  • Make sure that presidents are updated on the issues of the students.
  • By the end of the year, make a report of all of the students who have reached out to the SC for help, and put it in the binder.
  • Be aware that the person holding this position, needs to acquire good communication skills, and be very trustworthy, in order for the students to not to be afraid to have a conversation about their issues with him/her.
  • Note that maintaining good grades is one of the key points of being a good SC member. 

Please, keep in mind, that in those cases where a member does not live up to these criteria, in spite of being elected, he/she will be dismissed from being an SC member for one academic term.

In such cases, Presidents are obliged to have a talk with the co-ordinator of the SC, head of the Student’s Activity Department, and solve the problem together.

Election Process

1. All campaign material must be approved by the Students’ Activity Department, to ensure content meets campus standards.

2. Candidates are allowed a maximum of fifty flyers.

3. Any candidate caught defacing or removing another candidate’s materials, will forfeit his/her candidacy.

4. No campaign material may slander any other candidate.

5. Campaign posters must be placed in approved locations by the Marketing Department and removed once the election process is officially closed. 

Elections are held once a year in November. All students have active and passive voting rights. The main rules are as follows:

  • elections are held online on the USOS platform;
  • candidates apply themselves – online;
  • one student can vote for 30 candidates.

  • are 2nd or 3rd-year students;
  • have a GPA of at least 3.75;
  • the first language (Polish or English) skills, must be at least at B1 level, and the second language (Polish or English) skills – at A2 level; 

  • are at least 2nd-semester students;
  • have a GPA of at least 3.25;
  • need to present to SC members and the newly elected President and Vice-president, information about the goals and plans they want to achieve in a given terms

The newly-elected Student Council should meet no later than 7 days after the elections, to get to know team members, discuss the action plan for the given academic year, and forward it to the Student Activity Department.

The Student Government is obliged to organise at least 3 events in each of the following areas in the academic year:

  • education;
  • charity;
  • entertainment.

The main aims of the Mentoring Program are to make the new students’ university life simpler, comfortable, meaningful and colorful. A Mentor, on the other hand, can benefit from the Program by getting a chance to understand a new culture.

How it works

  • A dedicated person (Mentor) supports, teaches, leads and serves as the model for a freshman student.
  • Peer mentoring model is implemented in Vistula University.
  • Mentoring can also be initiated by a Mentee and can happen informally when an individual seeks advice and support from someone else.
  • Mentoring is only one form of support. Individuals may be supported in other ways, e.g. by colleagues (peer support), line managers, counsellors, tutors/teachers and groups. It is important to recognize that an individual may have a variety of support, for a variety of reasons, including more than one mentor, at any given time and that this structure of support may vary over a period of time.

  • Provides accurate information during the application process.
  • Takes part in educational and starting meetings before the matching phase.
  • Takes part in surveys and evaluations. Supports activities during the learning
    process.
  • Within one year stays connected with the program for at least 8 months.
  • Supports the process of giving feedback, reporting and evaluation throughout the
    program.

Student Assistant of an Academic Teacher

Vistula University runs a program called ’Student Assistant of Academic Teachers’ (SANA). The aim is, inter alia, increasing the motivation to learn, supporting especially gifted students, and providing them with new development opportunities.

The programme is aimed at outstanding students, with an average grade of at least 4.2.
The recruitment takes place once a year, no later than by September 22

The idea behind ​​the project is to strengthen the student research environment, increase the involvement of students in research and teaching activities, promote the community dimension of the university, and prepare students to undertake research and teaching work in their professional lives.

Students who have passed all their subjects, actively participate in the life of the university, are able to present a recommendation from a Vistula academic teacher, and a certificate of foreign language proficiency, in which they will perform SANA duties at a level of at least B2, may apply for the programme. The application questionnaire together with the required appendices should be submitted to the secretariat of the relevant Faculty.

The terms of the SANA functions, consists of two stages, each of which lasts two semesters. A person who successfully completes the first stage, may receive a special scholarship.

A student who successfully completes the SANA functions receives the appropriate entry in the Diploma Supplement. There is also the opportunity to participate, free of charge, in international conferences and seminars. He/She also obtains additional recommendations in the process of applying for the Rector’s and Minister’s scholarships, and for a PhD scholarship.
