International Success of Vistula University Students

We are proud to announce that students from Vistula University have won first place in the prestigious #RetoAltares2024 competition organized by the Instituto Mexicano de los Mexicanos en el Exterior (IMME). This international project, promoting the rich cultural heritage of Mexico, provided a unique opportunity to showcase our university on the global stage.

RetoAltares is a competition for the most beautiful altar constructed according to Mexican traditions to celebrate Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). The work of students from the Faculty of Philology and Journalism, guided by Ms. Karolina Nuria Czępińska, was inspired by the theme of Lucha Libre and dedicated to the remarkable figures of this Mexican art of professional wrestling.

The altar was unveiled during the Día de Muertos celebrations at Warsaw’s Kinoteka. It featured luchador masks, sugar skulls, pan de muerto (bread of the dead), Abuelita chocolate, and photos of deceased athletes. Crowning the altar was a figure of La Catrina, symbolizing the triumph of death over life, along with a miniature wrestling ring as a tribute to lucha libre, one of the most recognizable forms of Mexico’s cultural heritage.

The event attracted many enthusiasts of Mexican culture from across Poland. In addition to the inauguration of the altar, the program included a screening of the film Arráncame la Vida and a Catrinas and Catrines contest with prizes. The celebration was enriched by performances from the Monarka Mex Folk ensemble, showcasing traditional Mexican dances such as La Bruja and Xochipitzahuatl, as well as a tasting of dishes prepared by chefs Isabel Balderas and Pamela Montellano.

The victory of Vistula students in #RetoAltares2024 is not only a distinction for our university but also a testament to the importance of promoting intercultural dialogue and cooperation. Thanks to the dedication of our students and the support of the Iberian Studies Science Club, Mexican tradition was presented with passion and respect.

We congratulate our students and Ms. Karolina Nuria Czępińska for their exceptional commitment and creativity! We also extend our heartfelt thanks to the Mexican Embassy in Poland and the consulates in Douglas and Orlando for their support in organizing this remarkable event.
