From 1971 to 1980, he was a teaching and research fellow at the Warsaw School of Economics. Marek has authored dozens of research papers, text books, and books on economics and finance. He was employed by the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) in Vienna (1980–1986). He was also Department Head in the Ministry of Foreign Trade (1987–1991), being responsible for Poland’s collaboration with OECD countries. In 1991, he was Under-Secretary of State in the Ministry of Industry and Trade. In May 1992, he was employed by the Polish-American Enterprise Fund, where he led a loan programme for small and medium enterprises.
